Ember

Delta-geometry 3D printer with a unique Art-deco inspired style

-Inverse kinematics used to layout the internal geometry

-Appropriate choice of tolerances for critical and non-critical areas

The objective of this project was to produce a 3D printer which would fit physically and visually in a household environment; using traditional materials and modern delta geometry to achieve this. This was a solo project meaning that traditional manufacturing methods had to be used to create high-precision components. Finally, the machine had to be tuned to correct for any imperfections which was achieved through rigorous optimisation methods.

Monolith

A performance PC with a non-standard layout for improved thermals

-Thermal and airflow simulations to optimise layout

-Working with multiple design standards (ATX, PCIE)

The Monolith was built as a response to the lack of high performance and low volume PC cases in the market. It can fit any modern graphics card, a 280mm radiator and a CPU with up to a 500W TDP, all in a 100mm wide package. The design was originally to be produced by an ODM, but due to lack of availability it was produced in-house. Through this project my skills and understanding of working with sheet metal have improved significantly.

Tepan

An IOT cooking system designed for millennial kitchens

-Working in a startup environment seeking funding

-Leading hardware prototyping against a tight schedule

Tepan is an IOT start-up which I was onboarded for to lead hardware efforts. Prototypes to demonstrate viability were made as well as finalised hardware designs (NDA). My position as technical project manager meant I was responsible with integration of performance requirements for the electronics as well as the visual requirements of the design team.

Drone

Design study optimising the layout of racing drones

-Designing for durability & lightness

-Layout optimisation considering thermals and aerodynamics

The project was to optimise the layout of racing drones to be more robust for learning pilots. The last images are of the standard way of assembling racing drones, with delicate components exposed to any impact. Due to the manufacturing method the internals are very tight, so the design was never made public, but the machines that were built were used.

Whegs Vehicle

A Vehicle based on the Whegs paradigm optimised for speed and durability

-Finite element analysis used to verify component durability

-Production of technical drawings clear enough for 3rd party manufacture

This vehicle was an academic project used to prove the viability of Whegs Systems as a mobility platform for extreme conditions whilst keeping costs low enough to have each machine be disposable. The pivot-steering mechanism enabled an IP 57 to be feasible at an extremely low cost.

Dyson Makeathon

Spacelark – a revolutionary method of movement in a low-gravity environment

-This was a two day competition to “Revolutionise transport on the journey to Mars”

-Working in a new team under high pressure circumstances

Spacelark enables users legs to act as prehensile appendages in low- gravity environments, improving safety and reducing the learning-curve of space travel. Once on Mars this tool can be used as a waking aid on the sandy surface. The design is based on biomimicry of bird talons, but modified to better fit human anthropometrics and the existing limited mobility.

Surface Marco

A watch which aids those with hearing problems to identify sources of sound

-Human centred design for an undeserved user group

-Product designed to fit an existing design language and portfolio

The Surface Macro consist of an array of microphones and actuators which are used to map incoming audio to vibrations which can be interpreted by people with no hearing, helping with special awareness. As battery life is a major concern for an aid product, the dial around the watch can be used as a generator to produce power. Disclaimer: This project is not affiliated with Microsoft

Hydro Wipe

A system redesign optimising delivery and environmental impact of wet wipes

-Systems focused product design

-Researching future implementation with current technology

The team was tasked to design a more environmentally conscious wet wipe to be deployed in the next few years. By splitting the life cycle into two by separating the packaging from the product we could make the system fully renewable whilst building business opportunities in underdeveloped countries though bamboo farming.

Watchfaces

Watch faces for android wear smartwatches

-Watchfacer android app required

-Certain designs are derivative, see individual credits

All of these the previews are circles, but the faces should be fine on square watches. Download individual designs from here.

Thingiverse

A collection of 3D designs which are made public to help other people

-Simple and efficient designs

-designed for low-cost rapid prototyping

These designs were primarily made for personal use but made public as they could help other people as well; The designs are made as simply as possible to encourage modification to fit whatever the user wants to do with them. They can be found on Thingiverse

Blender

ArchVis and visual renders made with Blender

-Visual-focused designs

-Use of an ever-evolving open source suite

Mesh-oriented design suites are very useful for designing products with more complex geometries that are difficult to ideate with efficiently in traditional CAD packages. This permits me to explore more complex geometries to convert to designs.

Generative Design & Archive

Generative design studies completed with Fusion 360 & an archive of previous works

-Complete previous projects

-Produced mostly with FDM 3D printing

This is an archive of previous projects that have been embodies with FDM 3D printing, The designs are very function oriented so they are collated on a single page.
